History of the Prize
The Stockholm Water Prize is a prestigious international award that has been presented annually since 1991.

The Prize originated from Stockholm’s celebration of achieving some of the world’s cleanest water. During planning for the Stockholm Water Festival, organizers conceived the idea of creating a prestigious water award to match this achievement.
While inspired by the Nobel tradition, the Stockholm Water Prize operates independently and maintains its own rigorous standards of academic and professional excellence.
Since its inception, the Prize has honored scientists, practitioners, and organizations whose exceptional contributions have advanced water science and protection. Laureates have delivered groundbreaking discoveries and developed transformative solutions that address global water challenges.
Through recognizing these achievements, the Stockholm Water Prize has expanded scientific understanding while amplifying innovative ideas that shape water policy and practice worldwide.
